What are the ways describing successful family
relationships?
Healthy family relationships help all members of a
family feel safe and connected to one another. Family relationships sometimes
involve conflict, which is a normal part of family life. Conflicts can occur
between adults, children or adults and children: disagreements about household
chores, parenting decisions, house rules or siblings wanting to watch another
TV shows or not wanting to share toys. It is important that these conflicts are
dealt with in a safe and respectful way. Healthy family relationships also mean
that positive relations between family members outnumber the difficult times.
Spending
more time together as a whole family and with each child, even if it is for a
few minutes each day.
Showing affection (hugs, kisses, kind words or a
pat on the back).
Helping and supporting one another.
Doing
something funny and laughing together.
Sharing values and engaging in family rituals
(family dinners, weekend walks or movie nights) for building a sense of
belonging.
Talking with each other.
Having
family discussions dealing with organising family events and overcoming family difficulties.
Understanding and respecting each other’s
feelings.
Involving children in decisions affecting them;
giving younger children choices to help them make a decision (accepting child’s identity).
Trusting,
respecting, supporting, loving one another.
Recognising and appreciating everybody’s
different likes, needs and wants and understanding that this may sometimes create
challenges within the family.
No violence!
